Mae’s Bluegrass Birthday

It was a blessing for us to be able to host Mae Camp’s birthday party out at the ranch in Larkspur last weekend. It was actually the second year in a row we’ve hosted Mae and her family and friends, and this was a big one: The Big 9-Oh!

At 90, Mae is still one of the most energetic, loving, and fun people we’ve been fortunate to host. She refuses to slow down! We see it especially when she gets on stage. Mae’s a crackerjack guitarist who can still shred it bluegrass style. And her bluegrass/chuckwagon-themed hoedown was one of the most fun adult birthday party ideas I’ve seen.

It was a gloriously sunny day out at the ranch (where we also host rustic weddings and other events). As usual we started the party off with a hayride on our antique Sears and Roebuck wagon to get everyone from the parking area down to the stables, where we had the stage and sound system set up outside, along with our chuckwagon food line.

One of the true treats of the afternoon was getting to see and hear Mae and her family band play folk and bluegrass songs, like Fire on the Mountain, The Midnight Special, Penny’s Farm, and a bunch of other singing cowboy tunes I had never heard. It seems like everyone in Mae’s family can sing beautifully or play the fiddle or guitar like they were ringing a bell!

Providing the rustic event venue for Mae’s party for the second year in a row did get me to thinking about how so many of us, when we grow up, forget to stop to celebrate and appreciate all the little milestones we cross along our journeys.

How many of us just stop having birthday parties because we think we’re too “mature,” or “grown up?” When did we decide that being an adult meant ignoring the little kid inside of us who still loves birthday cake, balloons, and a fun sunny day outdoors with our family and friends?

Celebrating a birthday with Mae has really got my brain going a mile a minute with all sorts of fun adult birthday party ideas we could put together down at the ranch.

We always recommend keeping it pretty simple with a potluck buffet line or BBQ, some Snow Creek Ranch sliders or steaks on the grill, a few beers and adult lemonades, plus sodas and regular lemonade for the kids. Keeping it simple will keep your stress level under control, and allow everyone to just focus on the love and blessings of your family and friends.
